Americans on top on day two
Americans Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat were in awesome form to shock Brazilians Larissa/Talita in dramatic fashion on day two of the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone.
The duo, seventh seeds, warmed up for another big match against home heroes Ludwig/Walkenhorst at 7pm CET tonight, with a brilliant 21-19, 24-22 win over their South American opponents to leave Larissa/Talita winless from both of their matches.
“It was crazy out there. Brooke and I just stayed intense, we knew we had the side out there in the end when it was close,” Summer said afterwards. “It was a battle, Brazil is so good, and we can’t let up or go easy. It was back and forth the entire match, but we stayed steady until the end, when it mattered.”
After winning the first set the, Brooke and Summer trailed by five points early in the second set but summoned the energy to go on and storm to victory.
“It was just about staying steady on our side. It got ugly for a little bit, especially on the second set when we were down 6-1,” said Brooke. “I think we just set an aggressive serving, my passing was not great for most of the match but near the end we got a little more aggressive in our offense. I just think we believed the whole time.”
Having lost both of their pool play matches, all is not lost for Larissa/Talita.
“We couldn’t find our game yet,” said Talita. “We are playing and playing but things are not happening.
“Perhaps it’s mental, perhaps it’s physical, I really don’t know. We were a little bit better in the second set, but it wasn’t good enough.”
