21 on the run

Vikings dig deep to keep unbeaten run going

With a 20-match winning sequence to protect, the toughest thing for Anders Mol and Christian Sørum is to keep it going.

And the Beach Volley Vikings were pushed all the way against Latvians Edgars Tocs and Martin Plavins but battled back from losing the first set to stretch their run to 21 matches.

It was the second time the Norwegians had met the Latvians during their unbelievable run – and both games were decided in three close sets.

“Maybe that’s toughest match of all so far,” said an exhausted Anders after the 18-21, 21-19, 15-12 win. “Both games against them in this streak have been two of the hardest. They know how to play, they barely make any mistakes and it’s hard to get points off them. But we managed to win, we fought to the end and I’m proud of how we came back because that was not easy.”

Despite the victory, it was a frustrating match for the 21-year-old blocker, who was disappointed with a few small errors that crept into his game.

“I didn’t find my rhythm, I got some serves and I had to sideout and block which was exhausting but we found a way,” he said. “I found my rhythm in the second set and then we pulled it out in the third. They are strong team but they are all strong here – so we’re happy to beat them.

“I was frustrated with myself because I made some stupid plays in transition and I didn’t manage to set Christian at important moments in the game. That’s frustrating because you do not get many chances against the top teams and when you get them you’ve got to take them. It was stupid and I got angry because I want to set perfectly for Christian.

“I want things to be perfect. I don’t want things to be half-done. I’m angry at myself but it’s because I know it’s important for us in the game and for our development as we look to improve.”

Can the Norwegians make it 22 unbeaten? They take on their victims of the Gstaad Major final, Herrera/Gavira on the Red Bull Beach Arena 6pm CEST. Watch the game live on BeachStream.
